Many thought it was just an April Fools’ joke, but it’s now confirmed that the Kuso Miso Technique manga is getting an anime adaptation. Though before it can get fully produced, a crowdfunding campaign has commenced.

At this point, many anime fans may not be familiar with how the meme began given that it started spreading two decades ago.

While the yaranaika (“let’s do it” in English) face is still a popular meme reaction, the Kuso Miso Technique meme began way back in the early 2000s.

Specifically, it started on Japanese image boards, and it was then shared on English-language boards and forums.

Until now, the yaranaika face continues to be edited unto other characters.

This meme can trace its origins to the Kuso Miso Technique one-shot which was released back in 1987 by Junichi Yamakawa, an artist known for his gay manga works.

The one-shot follows Masaki Michishita, a prep school student who is running toward a park’s restroom. There, he comes across Takakazu Abe, an auto mechanic wearing a jumpsuit.

Explicit and disgusting are two words that can describe what happens next.

This, coupled with the funny faces that they make, made the manga a meme when scans of it were uploaded on Japanese image boards.

Now, it seems more people will be exposed to the work with the announcement of the anime.

The anime was originally announced earlier this month, leading many to believe that it’s just an April Fools’ prank.

After all, the manga that it’s based on is popular mostly for being a meme.

It will be produced by Studio Kingyoiro, a small studio with a couple of low-budget works under its belt.

Because Kuso Miso Technique is known more as a meme, it’s no surprise that a crowdfunding campaign for it has been launched.

Specifically, the campaign aims to raise JPY 8 million (around USD 600,000) to fund the production.

Those who sponsor the campaign will get various goodies depending on their donated amount.

Despite the crowdfunding campaign, some staff members for the anime were already announced.

These include Sumito Sasaki (Cells at Work! episode director) and Yi Zhang (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure animation director), among others.

For now, there’s no word yet on when the Kuso Miso Technique anime will be released.
