A few weeks ago, we learned that Oscar-winning actor Russell Crowe has joined the cast of Kraven the Hunter. During that time, the details of his role were kept under wraps with some speculating that he will be playing the father of the titular character. Now, it looks like we may have the confirmation regarding the details on the role that he is playing.

According to The Illuminerdi, Crowe will be playing Nikolai Kravinoff, the father of Sergei Kravinoff (aka Kraven the Hunter) and Dmitri Smerdyakov (Chameleon) in the upcoming Kraven the Hunter film. This has not been confirmed by Sony nor the major trades so we can take this with a grain of salt although it has been speculated that the actor is playing the father of Kraven the Hunter so it is highly likely to be true.

In case you're not familiar with the character, in the comics (as described by the report), Nikolai and his wife Anna were Russian aristocrats who raised their son Sergei in Volgograd Russia during the Russian Revolution. Nikolai fathered an illegitimate son, Dmitri, with Sonya Smerdyakova, one of the family’s servants. After the revolution came to an end, the Kravinoffs were forced to flee eventually ending up in the United States. Nikolai would die later on and he is also not known to be a kind father for either son.

However, since the film seems to be set during the present day, it is likely that they will not follow the comics in terms of the backstory and they will do some changes to the character to make it fit the present-day narrative that would serve the story better. It is also possible that the character will have a more prominent role rather than just being a flashback role since he is a high-profile casting for the project.

Assuming that Crowe is indeed going to play Nikolai, it is a great role that he can chew on and there are a lot of possibilities that they can do with the character. It also won't be the first time that Crowe will play the father in a comic book movie since he played Jor-El in Man of Steel. He is also set to play Zeus in Thor: Love and Thunder. It is exciting to see Crowe joining yet again another comic book movie and see how he'll do in his rumored role.
