One of the many films that Sony is currently working on for their Spider-Man Universe franchise is Kraven the Hunter which will focus on the titular antihero played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson. We haven't heard much development regarding the project until recently when numerous casting updates are being reported. Now, it looks like another cast member has joined the film to play a well-known character from the comics.
The Illuminerdi has reported that Sony is currently circling Zola and Ma Rainey's Black Bottom star Taylour Paige to play Calypso in Kraven the Hunter. The actress' casting is not yet officially a done deal as of the moment. It also comes after numerous reports from a few months ago that Without Remorse star Jodie Turner-Smith was in talks to play the role, but it looks like that is no longer the case.
Paige will be joining the cast that already includes Taylor-Johnson, Russell Crowe, and Fred Hechinger. J.C. Chandor will direct the film with Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach serving as producers. Art Marcum & Matt Holloway and Richard Wenk are writing the screenplay.
In case you're not familiar with the character (as described by the report), Calypso is a powerful voodoo priestess who is known for granting Kraven his enhanced abilities and manipulating his obsession with Spider-Man to the point of driving him to suicide in the comics. She is also nefarious for escaping and reversing her own death.
Similar to Hechinger's casting, it looks like Sony is seeking out a rising talent in Hollywood for the main roles in the film. While she doesn't have a lot of notable credits yet, she has been a rising star thanks to her main role in Zola (where she earned an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best Actress) and also co-starred in the award-winning Netflix film Ma Rainey's Black Bottom. Joining a Marvel movie could take her career to the next level and it would be interesting to see her take on Calypso once she officially gets cast on the role.

Kraven the Hunter is currently scheduled to be released in theaters on January 13, 2023.
