P.A. Works’ latest anime film is about a fictional whisky company looking to reproduce its signature whisky. Soon, this fabled drink will be available in real life as a distillery will recreate the Koma whisky in Komada: A Whisky Family after reaching over 500% of its crowdfunding goal.
The anime film was released in Japan back in November. Soon after, the Saburomaru Distillery launched a crowdfunding campaign where a recreation of the movie’s legendary whisky is a stretch goal.
Japanese Distillery Reaches 553% of Its Crowdfunding Goal
Komada: A Whisky Family is the latest anime film by P.A. Works, the studio behind shows such as Skip and Loafer and Akiba Maid War. This original movie is part of the studio’s Working! series alongside titles like Shirobako.
This movie follows Rui Komada, the new president of her family’s distillery business. Her goal after taking over is to recreate the family’s signature Koma whisky, which the distillery stopped producing years ago.
As an original anime, Komada is not based on a real-life story about a distillery, though the movie’s distillery is based on a real-life location.
The Wakatsuru Brewery is a real-life brewery found in Tonami City, Japan, and it served as the inspiration for the film’s distillery.
When P.A. Works' new movie opened in Japanese cinemas, the brewery started a crowdfunding campaign on CAMPFIRE to revitalize its business.
The Saburomaru Distillery is part of the said brewery, and it was included in the campaign with a stretch goal of recreating the Koma whisky. Just before the campaign ended, the stretch goal was met.
Thanks to this, the distillery will aim to produce a real-life version of the anime film’s whisky, in collaboration with other whisky distilleries in Japan.

What to Expect From the Real-Life Koma Whisky
When it comes to spirits aficionados, Japanese whisky has become in demand over the past years. This is thanks in part to the highly sought-after flavors in certain Japanese whiskies, as well as their rarity.
Thus, the prices of many Japanese whiskies have risen dramatically, especially the Suntory brands like Yamazaki and Hibiki.
Of course, that doesn’t mean all Japanese whisky is valuable for enthusiasts. Thus, it’ll be interesting to see if the real-life Koma whisky will rival the taste of more in-demand bottles.
We’ll have to wait until December 2024 though, as this whisky is scheduled to be ready that month.
As for the price, there’s a chance that it will have a high price tag given that many other Japanese whiskies have become incredibly expensive.
