Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker might have been one of the most highly anticipated films of 2019, however, the film ended up being one of the most divisive films in the franchise, raking in mixed-negative reviews from critics and dividing fans.
One of the problems that fans had with the film was an ending where Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) sacrifices his life so that Rey (Daisy Ridley) gets to live, only to see the Jakku orphan shedding her heritage as a Palpatine to become a Skywalker. Sure, it might seem dramatic for Rey to take on the Skywalker name, however, fans didn't quite like the execution of the film's end.
Now according to Popcorn Talk, Juan Bautista, one of the actors who played a member of the Knights of Ren in The Rise of Skywalker reveals an alternate ending for Rey in Episode IX. According to Bautista, director J.J. Abrams had an alternate ending for The Rise of Skywalker where Rey stays dead while Ben Solo goes on to take up the Skywalker name, living his life in ways that help redeem him from what he's done for the First Order.
It's an interesting reveal, to say the least. Ben Solo would have to carry a whole lot of weight on his shoulders paying for the atrocities that he's committed for the Dark Side of the Force. We would have loved to have seen a series following Ben Solo's adventures of redemption. It's such a shame that the actual ending of The Rise of Skywalker doesn't make this possible.
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is currently screening in cinemas.
