King of Monsters Director on How Kong Could Take on Godzilla

Godzilla and Ghidorah duked it out in King of the Monsters, but it's all building up to a clash between Godzilla and King Kong. KotM director Michael Dougherty talks a bit about the clash between the two Kaiju kings, and he says that Kong will actually come out as the underdog in the fight.

Talking to Bloody Disgusting, Dougherty explains:

"We're looking at an almost David vs. Goliath situation. Because everyone, the moment you say Godzilla's going to fight Kong, your first reaction is Kong doesn't stand a chance. Godzilla's got his radioactive breath, et cetera, et cetera."

What's interesting though is that, the Kong we meet in Skull Island is still growing, so give those decades between that film and Godzilla vs. Kong, it would have grown to be one of the most massive versions of the character ever.

Dougherty also continues, "Kong is extremely intelligent… As a primate, he's a tool-user. So he's got speed, he's got agility, he might have some good size."

With Kong and Godzilla basically being marketed as "good guys," my guess is that the film will have a bigger threat come to the surface, and Kong and Goji will have to team up to beat him. It's basically going to turn out like Batman v Superman, where the two fight for a bit, they become friends, then they beat the real villain—whoever that's going to be.

Catch Godzilla: King of the Monsters is now in theaters, and Godzilla vs. Kong is set for a release on March 13, 2020.
