Legendary’s Monsterverse Plans to Continue After Godzilla vs. Kong

Avengers: Endgame is currently blowing up at the box office right now, and Legendary has two blockbusters going up against it next month—Detective Pikachu and Godzilla: King of the Monsters. While KotM was meant to be the second installment in a trilogy that ends with Godzilla vs. Kong, it looks like the studio is planning to extend the franchise long after.

Talking to The Hollywood Reporter, CEO of Legendary Joshua Grode was asked about plans to expand the Monsterverse; when asked how much fuel was left in the franchise, Grode replied, "I hope a lot. I hope the gas tank is full."

For now, everyone is looking at Marvel who has just made a billion with the release of Avengers: Endgame. When it comes to competing in the market, Grode had explained that the studio isn't going to try and ‘compete' with the MCU, but rather compete against ‘themselves.' Grode goes on:

"Godzilla's not supposed to be Jurassic World. They both have creatures and animals. But we have to market it for what it is and not fall into the trap of, ‘It's Die Hard with a train.' So we're trying to be original in how we market it."

Grode has also confirmed besides expanding their Monsterverse, Legendary is also set to make 2 Dune films. Add to that a deal with the Pokemon Company, and we may be looking at a silent competitor when it comes to the cinematic universe game.

Hopefully Godzilla: King of the Monsters manages to get a decent box office run when it comes out May 31.
