Kindred Release Date, Spoilers & Update: TV Adaptation Of Octavia Butler's Novel Comes To Hulu

The acclaimed best-selling 1979 novel Kindred by Octavia E. Butler has now been given an official teaser from Hulu, giving fans their first look at the TV series, which will star Dana James (Mallori Johnson).

Kindred TV Series Overview

We'll meet Dana, a young woman who makes the difficult decision to leave her family and relocate to Los Angeles in order to pursue her writing dreams. But a new story begins to form for Dana as she finds herself jumping back and forth in time on an unpleasant journey that connects her to her family's past and the dark mysteries that come with it.

The harsh realities of the time period are a continual danger to the young woman who is compelled to make sense of an interracial love affair that threatens to rip her current existence apart as she meets with family members who came before her.

Kindred Teaser

In the recently released Kindred trailer, Dana experiences dread that is all too real as she erratically jumps between two realities: her existence in present-day Los Angeles and an unfamiliar environment on a 19th-century plantation.

The gloomy and perplexing tone of the story is expertly established in the teaser, keeping viewers in the dark about Dana's reality as she is. Kevin (Micah Stock), Dana's adoring lover, who confirms his partner's suspicions that she is time-traveling, is also introduced to us in the first look. Each trip into the past puts Dana's existence in danger as secrets are revealed.

Branden Jacobs-Jenkins conceptualized the eight-episode series, and he also acts as an executive producer alongside Joe Weisberg, Joel Fields, Darren Aronofsky, and Ari Handel. Janicza Bravo will direct the pilot episode and also serves as an executive producer.
