Kevin Smith on Why He and Ben Affleck Haven't Talked in Years

Kevin Smith and Ben Affleck have had an interesting history together, so the fact that the two don't talk anymore is a bit sad. Affleck starred in some of Smith's early films like Chasing Amy, so knowing that the two might not even be friends is heartbreaking. Smith even revealed that Affleck didn't reach out to him after a heart attack.

During an interview with The Daily Beast, Smith was asked about his strained relationship with Affleck. The Dogma and Clerks director stated that he wouldn't call it that but feels like they've just grown apart since Affleck is now one of Hollywood's biggest stars/directors. Smith also mentions how he tries to not bring up Affleck as much, even though he joked about his Batman performance in a recent special.

"I wouldn't call it not so great terms, but he hasn't spoken to me in years. No, I didn't hear from him after the heart attack. Of the Chasing Amy kids, I heard from Jason Lee, but I didn't hear from Ben. Which is fine. Maybe he didn't even hear about it. I think he probably plays a more prominent role in my mythology than I play in his mythology anymore. He was in some of my biggest movies, so in myworld he's still a figure. In his world, I haven't factored in ingod knows how fucking long. And he's gone on to do tremendous, big fucking things. He's become a massive movie star and a director in his own right. So I don't think I pop up on his radar nearly as much he pops up on my radar. But I try honestly to—and it probably doesn't seem that way because I literally make a joke about him in the special—to limit the amount that I do talk about him for that reason. Because I know it always brings him grief or heartache in some way."

He also brought up how Affleck got into some trouble after some comments Smith made during a Chasing Amy retrospective screening. The director thought he was telling a cute story about a young Affleck who felt that he was a real actor for kissing a boy, which caused controversy. Smith defended Affleck by pointing out that Affleck was young and it was 1996, a wildly different time.

It seems like these two won't be working together anytime soon, which is a bit of a shame. Still, people and priorities change, to no fault of anyone involved, so we can only hope that the two keep on doing well.
