It looks like Kentucky Governer Matt Bevin believes that shows like The Walking Dead encourage mass shootings in the US.
Bevin just recently spoke in an interview with Kentucky conservative radio host Leland Conway, and as outrageous as it sounds, once the two got to the topic of mass shootings and their disturbing frequency in the country, the governor decided to put the blame on The Walking Dead.
"Seriously, what's the most important topic that seems to be in every cable television network for example? Television shows are all about what? Zombies," Bevin said on the radio program.
Knowing that he'd get some backlash from The Walking Dead fans, Bevin tried to quell the outrageousness of his claim by saying that while he knows that the connection between the mass shootings and zombie television shows might seem a bit "trite and simplistic," it's still all a very valid claim. Apparently, its all the constant exposure to violent content the creates shooters among children.
"These are drips, drips, drips on the stones of the psyches of young generations that are growing up in a society that increasingly said this is normal and okay. And eventually, some of those young minds are not going to be able to handle it," the governor explained.
While violent content in media does have a certain impact on impressionable minds, we highly doubt that shows like The Walking Dead encourages children to take a gun from their home on go on a mass shooting spree at school. Not only does the statement seem hackneyed, but it also seems very biased. Has Bevin even really watched The Walking Dead? Because if he has, he'll understand the show is more than just violence and killings – it's also a statement on the human condition.
