Keanu Reeves on the ‘Incredible Depth’ of Matrix 4

The Matrix franchise had ended back in 2003, but 17 years later, the Wachowskis are ready to come back for a fourth film and main star Keanu Reeves is also aboard for a return. While we don't have any idea about the main story yet, Reeves teases something with ‘incredible depth'.

Talking to Empire, Reeves explained, "When it was brought to me in the way that it was brought to me, with incredible depth and all of the integrity and artistry that you could imagine, I was like, ‘This is a gift.' It was just very exciting."

Though the last two movies haven't been that well-received, you can't deny that the Matrix franchise has a lot of deep themes based on existentialism and control. When it comes to the fourth movie, I wouldn't really expect anything less.

Reeves continues, "Lana Wachowski wrote a beautiful script and a wonderful story that resonated with me… That's the only reason to do it. To work with her again is just amazing. It's been really special, and the story has, I think, some meaningful things to say, and that we can take some nourishment from."

Like I said, we have no idea about the main story yet, but I'm hopeful that the Wachowskis find a way to make this film resonate as much as the first film. Though main stars like Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss are making a return, I expect them to be ‘passing the torch' to new protagonists, one of which I assume is Watchmen's Yahya Abdul-Mateen II.

The Matrix 4 is set to come out on May 21, 2021.
