Keanu Reeves' epic return to the DC Universe has stirred controversy over the last couple of weeks. After it was officially announced last September that a second Constantine film is in the works nearly 20 years after the original's release, rumors began circulating earlier this month that the project has been vaulted, potentially due to DC Studios' new plans for the franchise.

Thankfully, the rumor surrounding the sequel's cancelation was immediately debunked but as it stands, the project's true progress remains unclear. Now, in a new update, it looks like Constantine 2 still has a long way to go before entering production.

Akiva Goldsman confirms that the sequel is still happening despite rumors claiming it was already canned by Warner Bros. Discovery. However, it appears that the film's plot has yet to be set in stone with the screenwriter revealing that the project is still in its "story breaking" phase.

He tells Deadline: "We're starting with two projects that are fun and very much Warners; the sequel to I Am Legend, with Will and Michael B. Jordan, and the sequel to Constantine with Keanu Reeves that Francis Lawrence is going to direct."

Goldsman continued: "So I'm coming out of the gate fast. We're doing it with JJ Abrams, and Francis and Keanu and I have been pretty deep in the story breaking stage."

DC Studios has yet to address the cancelation rumors and by the looks of things, James Gunn and Peter Safran have no problem with the film being greenlit. And frankly speaking, there shouldn't be an issue with Constantine 2 being a thing, especially with the studio exploring a number of Elseworld stories. Hopefully, the project won't encounter mishaps along the way because it's evident that Reeves fought hard for the film to materialize.

The original Constantine film is available to stream on HBO Max.
