It's been a long while since we last saw Keanu Reeves in a comic book project which is why fans were equally delighted and shocked after it was confirmed that WB is working on a Constantine sequel. However, it doesn't look like the project will move forward with new reports claiming that the film has been canned.

Insider KC Walsh claims that Constantine 2 isn't happening despite already being announced to be in development last year. As it stands, the production company and even DC Studios have yet to address the matter but it seems like Keanu himself already knew about the film's fate.

Last month, Keanu finally opened up about the long-overdue sequel but his statement also seems to cast doubt on the project actually coming to fruition. Speaking with Total Film Magazine (via SlashFilm), Reeves expressed his excitement for Constantine 2 but intriguingly teased the project's actual status.

He said: "So it's exciting. It's almost like an open playground that we can hopefully cook something up and play in, and I guess get out of the playground and prepare a meal. But I'm looking forward to it, and hopefully it can happen. You don't know how these things go. But I'm definitely going to try my darndest to try and realize that dream."

Reading between the lines, Keanu seems to hint that Constantine 2 may be experiencing some production troubles. In the same interview, he also shared how WB was never interested in pulling the trigger on the sequel and only agreed after lobbying so hard for it.

It's evident that James Gunn and Peter Safran are prioritizing the main DC Universe continuity and obviously, Keanu Reeves' iteration of the occult detective won't be part of it. However, they can easily put the character in the "Elseworlds" category if they truly want to push through with the project.

The original Constantine film is available to stream on HBO Max.
