Karl Urban Says Quentin Tarantino Is Hoping For An R-Rating For His Star Trek Project

Cult film director Quentin Tarantino might still be preoccupied with his latest project, Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, but a lot of fans are also anticipating his upcoming Star Trek film. Though there haven't been that many updates regarding Tarantino's Star Trek project, Star Trek film star Karl Urban claims that the filmmaker is hoping to turn his interpretation of the science fiction franchise into an R-rated movie.

Urban just recently attended this year's Trekonderoga (via Trek Movie), and during the event, the Star Trek actor decided to give fans a few updates regarding the future of the Star Trek franchise. While Urban does reveal that Tarantino does hope to work on an R-rated Star Trek movie, he assuages fans concerns over too much obscenity in the movie, saying that the filmmaker just wants to capture the graphic horrors in space.

"Quentin Tarantino went into J.J. [Abrams]'s offices and pitched him an idea for a Star Trek movie. I know a little bit about what that is and it's bananas... You shouldn't worry that it is going to be full of obscenity and stuff. He wants an R-rating to really make those beats of consequence land. If it's not PG, if someone gets sucked out into space, which we have all seen before, we might see them get disemboweled first… It allows some breadth… gives him some leeway to do that. To me, that was always one of the things I loved about what DeForest Kelley did. He would actually capture the horror of space. That look in his eyes of sheer terror always struck me when I was a kid."

Fans were pretty much concerned when word came out that Tarantino would be directing a Star Trek film – mostly because the filmmaker is known for his colorful dialogue and for his intense scenes. However, it seems like Tarantino's Star Trek movie isn't going to stray too far from the franchise, though it might seem more mature than the Star Trek films before it. Paramount and Bad Robot's Star Trek movies might be a bit more family friendly, but it looks like the studios are more open to newer and fresher R-rated ideas thanks to the success of films like 20th Century Fox's Logan and Deadpool.

Tarantino's Star Trek movie doesn't have a release date yet but we'll update everyone as soon as we get word.
