Karl Urban is Confident Star Trek 4 will Begin Shooting Next Year

Though Star Trek: Beyond gained generally favorable reviews, the film ended up underperforming in the box office, and the status of Star Trek 4 has been a bit unclear since then. Karl Urban, who plays the Kelvin timeline's McCoy, however, is confident that the movie could start shooting sometime next year.

He tells JoBlo:

"It's really a question for Paramount (laughs). But, that being said, I have such a blast working on those Star Trek movies. You know, that cast, we're like family at this point. I'm pretty confident within, hopefully the next year, that we'll be back on the set."

After news came out that Quentin Tarantino was developing a Trek movie with J.J. Abrams, people thought that Trek 4 would be his next feature, but for now, it seems that his next movie will be his Charles Manson film, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

Before Tarantino was onboard, there were rumors that the next film would bring back Chris Hemsworth's George Kirk in some kind of time-travel story, but Hemsworth has admitted that he had stopped receiving updates once news about Tarantino came out.

I've thoroughly enjoyed the new Trek films, and though some purists don't love them, I think J.J. Abrams has created a whole new slew of fans who are devoted to the characters in the Kelvin timeline. Hopefully Urban's guessing that production will start next year will come out true.

No official release date has been announced for Star Trek 4.
