Takahiro Sakurai has caused a major delay for another anime feature. The Jujutsu Kaisen star has left the upcoming Mononoke film and Twin Engine has announced that the movie is going to be delayed as the role of the Medicine Seller is recast.
Takahiro Sakurai Exits Mononoke Film
The animation studio Twin Engine shared a statement confirming that the Mononoke release date will be delayed. The statement also explains why it is necessary for the Medicine Seller to be recast in the film.
"The animated film Mononoke sets in Ooku (historically the women's quarters in Edo Castle) and tries to depict the suffering and remedy of women. Judging from the standpoint of the story, we decided to change the cast of the Medicine Seller," the statement reads.
"We would like to apologize to all the fans and ask for your continued support. We will be able to announce the release date of the movie and the new cast around the summer. Please be patient with us," it continues.
Although Takahiro Sakurai is not mentioned in the statement, it is believed that the studio decided to recast the Medicine Seller due to the voice actor's recent cheating scandal. Back in October, it was revealed that Sakurai had been engaged in an extramarital affair for at least 10 years. Sakurai has not made a public appearance since the news was released.
This isn't the first project that Takahiro Sakurai has lost since October. It has also been confirmed that he will no longer play one of the main characters in the GoRA and King Records' original anime project Ayaka: A Story of Bonds and Wounds.
Interestingly, there has been no update from Jujutsu Kaisen on whether Sakurai's character Suguru Geto will also be recast in the second season. Stay tuned for more updates on this story.
