When it first came out in October 2020, the Jujutsu Kaisen anime took the world by storm because of how intense and cool it was. Moreover, it introduced incredibly powerful characters such as Yuji Itadori, Satoru Gojo, and more.

Even before its release, the anticipation surrounding Season 2 and the material it was set to adapt had already reached astronomical levels across platforms like X, Reddit, and more.

And it has lived up to the hype so far. Now, let's begin our review!

Season 2 of Jujutsu Kaisen is divided into two parts, featuring two different arcs.

Part 1 covers the Hidden Inventory/Premature Death arc that is set in 2006 and follows the journey of Gojo, who embarks on a mission alongside Geto.

They are both second-year students at Tokyo Jujutsu High. Their task is to safely deliver the Star Plasma Vessel to Master Tengen.

During the quest, Geto and Gojo face opposition from curse user factions plotting against them.

The arc is just five episodes long, but its treatment is stellar and leaves an impact on the viewer’s mind.

The one character that shines in Part 1 of Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 has to be Geto.

His transformation from Gojo’s comrade and bestie to becoming a downright evil character is mindboggling and heartbreaking.

As much as I hate the evil Geto toward the end of Season 2 Part 1, I empathize with him and still think about the gentle Geto and his scenes with Riko Amanai and Gojo.

Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 Part 2 covers the highly anticipated Shibuya Incident arc. As of writing, we have seen six episodes featuring the Shibuya Incident arc.

Talking about its plot, the story delves into the events of the Shibuya Incident that unfolded on October 31, 2018.

During this incident, the alliance between cursed spirits and curse users, orchestrated by Mahito and Pseudo-Geto, sets their plan in motion to capture and seal Gojo.

Jujutsu Kaisen Season 1 vs. Season 2

The most significant contrast between Season 1 and Season 2 lies in the arrival of a new director.

While Sung Hoo Park (The God of High School) helms Season 1, Season 2 sees Shota Goshozono (Black Clover, Chainsaw Man) taking the directorial reins in Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2.

With this directorial transition, there have been visible stylistic differences.

While Jujutsu Kaisen Season 1 adhered faithfully to the classic shounen action-packed formula, Season 2 leans more towards a cinematic approach.

I believe MAPPA has outdone itself as a studio while animating Season 2 because the scenes are stinkingly gorgeous.

Furthermore, the Hidden Inventory/Premature Death arc boasts a lofi-inspired aesthetic that exudes nostalgia, perfectly complementing the theme of Gojo and Geto's friendship.

Is Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 Worth Watching?

With a resounding yes, Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2, so far, absolutely shines in all departments.

From animation to character designs and development, Season 2 is a remarkable and worthy second season to the iconic series.

Nonetheless, my sole complaint pertains to selecting the opening theme song for the Shibuya Incident arc, SPECIALZ by King Gnu.

While I've never skipped a Jujutsu Kaisen opening or ending song before, SPECIALZ didn't quite resonate with me.

But coming back to Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2, it has easily become one of my top favorites for 2023. It is a blast and a definite must-watch.

Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 Review Score
Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 is a cinematic masterpiece that delves into the story of Satoru Gojo and the fallout between him and Suguro Geto. It explores the profound consequences that triggered the Shibuya Incident.
