Jujutsu Kaisen Beats Demon Slayer, Tokyo Revengers to Become The Best-Selling Manga of 2021 in Japan

Jujutsu Kaisen is officially the best-selling manga series in Japan, according to the Japanese sales tracker Oricon. The company released its yearly ranking of the best-selling manga titles for this year, revealing that Gege Akutami's popular tale of sorcerers and curses just barely oversold Koyoharu's Demon Slayer: Kimetsuno Yaiba.

While Demon Slayer sold over 29.5 million copies in Japan in its final year of serialization, Jujutsu Kaisen sold over 30 million copies this year. Although Demon Slayer didn't claim the overall top spot, the 23rd and final volume was the best-selling single volume of a manga in Japan for 2021, with over five million copies sold. Note that Oricon sales charts only track physical sales, so it doesn't include the revenue made from digital manga sales.

Third place was claimed by Ken Wakui's time traveling series Tokyo Revengers, which sold 25 million copies; Hajima Isayama's Attack on Titan came fourth with 7.3 million copies sold. Like Demon Slayer, Attack on Titan ended this year, but the series might be planning future projects. Kohei Horikoshi's My Hero Academia rounded out the top 5 with a little over 7 million copies sold.

It's clear that Jujutsu Kaisen continues to be a global hit. It was recently announced that the manga will surpass 60 million copies in circulation by the end of the year. The popular manga series just premiered in 2018, and thanks to MAPPA's acclaimed anime adaptation of the series, sales of the manga were boosted this year. The series is also getting its first theatrical release with the prequel film Jujutsu Kaisen 0.
