Joker's Todd Phillips had Other Directors in Mind for DC Black

Todd Phillips had made quite the hit with Joker, and a lot of people are almost certain that WB will continue to push forward when it comes to the "DC Black" label. What's interesting is, Phillips actually had other directors in mind, and he wanted them to take on several other DC characters.

Talking to Rumble with Michael Moore (via The Playlist), Phillips explains, "What I pitched them was, ‘We should start a label. We should start a label where we get great directors—Joker could be the first on—but let's do a label called DC Black, where we make stripped-down, no CGI, no spandex quote-unquote comic book movies, but we do deep-dive character studies,' and I literally said, ‘get so-and-so [director] to do this character'—I don't want to name them because I never told these directors [my proposal]—'get so-so to do that character,' and we start with Joker and we start a whole label."

With Marvel basically adhering to Disney rules, Phillips was set to make something for DC that Disney wouldn't allow, that being R-rated and gritty films. We don't know if WB is ready to make more projects like Joker down the line, but after the success of the movie, you'd think they would want to keep going at the DC Black label at the same time as the "main" DCEU.

After Joker, WB has admittedly not announced any other projects like this, but hopefully, we get something next year. I would love for Darren Aronofsky to have a take on a character, or maybe David Fincher. Do you think Edgar Wright would want to work with superheroes again after what happened with Ant-Man?

For now, the next DCEU film is Birds of Prey which comes out Feb 7, 2020.
