After months of waiting, we finally got our first look at Joaquin Phoenix's Joker movie and it looks interesting, to say the least. From what can be gathered, this is going to be one hell of a weird movie but has a better grasp on the dark and gritty themes that Zack Snyder's DC films failed to do. It doesn't feel like a comic book movie but that's exactly what they were going for.
It seems like this version of The Joker, who will have a real name, is going to have a fairly tragic backstory. We see him get beat up and the character has seemingly forced himself to never be sad or mad, which will likely break him. Phoenix seems to be giving it his all and the actor has also lost a ton of weight, which is evident in the trailer.
From what can be seen, this is clearly a character-driven story that doesn't follow the comics. The makeup for this version of Joker was a dead giveaway since there is no other iteration of the character that looks like this.
So far, we have no reference to Batman or The Wayne Family, though Gotham City was name dropped, which was inevitable. It seems like we won't be seeing any super heroics in this film, which will be a breath of fresh air to many who are tired of the constant fight scenes that tend to dominate comic book movies.
Fans will be able to see Joker in cinemas on October 4. Did it put a smile on your face?
