Joker Reportedly Tracking For Bigger Opening Than Aquaman

There is little doubt that Joker is one of the most anticipated films of 2019 considering that it's a completely different take on the DC comic book villain. But is it possible that the Joaquin Phoenix movie will earn more than DC Extended Universe's Aquaman? A new report suggests that the Warner Bros. flick is tracking for a bigger opening than the James Wan feature.

The forecast comes from Box Office Pro, which reveals that Joker is already expected to earn around $77 million on its opening weekend alone. This is a little higher than Aquaman, which took in $67.8 million when it opened last December.

So why is there such a positive forecast for Joker? The report points out that fans are eagerly anticipating a unique take on one of the most iconic supervillains ever introduced. In addition to that, it suggests that "audiences have shown their appetite for well-made, adult-driven, R-rated comic book movies" after the success of Logan and Deadpool.

Joker is directed by Todd Phillips and also stars Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, and Frances Conroy. It will introduce Brett Cullen as Thomas Wayne while young actor Dante Pereira-Olson will portray a young Bruce Wayne. The introduction of the young Wayne could make way for the other DC film The Batman, which will star Robert Pattinson as the Caped Crusader.

Will Joker dominate the box office later this year? The film is set to premiere at the 76th Venice International Film Festival on August 31. It will be released theatrically on October 4.
