Joker Director Todd Phillips Talks About Potential Sequel

Todd Phillips' Joker was a huge hit among the fans. The film received a huge amount of positive feedback even with critics saying that it might be running for an Oscar.

Considering that it placed a top award at this year's Venice Film Festival, it is evident that the film was loved by many, with a rating of 70% from Metacritic and 75% on Rotten Tomatoes.

As the movie reaches its peak, fans are wondering if Joker would have its own sequel. Seeing that it could potentially be a blockbuster movie as well.

Unfortunately, it's not looking good for those who are expecting one. Joker director Todd Phillips confirms with the press in Los Angeles (via IGN) that it's not gonna happen.

"We have no plan for a sequel," Phillips says. He was firm with his answer while the press has been asking for a response after an earlier interview he had together with Joaquin Phoenix.

This interview pertains to the speculations of a potential sequel, with the director saying he will do anything Joaquin wants to do. Although the "movie's not set up to a sequel" since they "pitched it as one movie."

Phillips shares that he found these reports quite "annoying" like what he stated in the Total Film interview that was actually taken out of context.

The Joker director made it clear that the movie was not meant to be a part of the DC Universe since it was only a standalone film. Phillips says, "We made this movie, I pitched it to Warner Bros. as one movie. It exists in its own world. That's it."

He makes it a point that the movie is only a representation of their own version of the origin story. Since it is "not about world-building" and that it isn't about "other versions."

Personally, I would like for Phillips to just leave it as it is because fans tend to expect much for a sequel that may lead to a potential disappointment. And since Phillips is firm about this, I think he made a good decision.

Joker is set to release in the US on October 4.
