New Joker Footage Shows Joaquin Phoenix Paying Tribute To Heath Ledger

One of the first things we've learned about the new Joker movie is that it's nothing like the previous incarnations of the Clown Prince of Crime. However, that doesn't mean that the Todd Phillips film didn't give a respectful nod to at least one legendary Joker. New footage from the DC movie seemingly features Joaquin Phoenix paying tribute to the late Heath Ledger.

The footage appears in the Chinese trailer for Joker. There are some interesting new shots in the teaser and at one point, it looks like Arthur Fleck ends up in a police car just like Ledger's Joker in The Dark Knight. Watch out for the brief shot at the 0:20 mark below.

In The Dark Knight, Joker has a leisurely moment as he cruises in a police car. While we're not sure what's happening to Arthur in the Joker trailer, he seems to be, er, delighted with his ride as well. It might not be a direct tribute but it appears to be a reference to Ledger's iconic performance in the Chris Nolan film.

That's not the only obvious nod to previous Jokers in the 2019 movie. Many have pointed out that the mask resembles Cesar Romero's take on the DC villain. With that in mind, it's hard to simply avoid all the other Jokers even in the upcoming Warner Bros. movie.

Joker also stars Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, and Frances Conroy. It is scheduled for release on October 4.
