Joker Director Todd Phillips Says DC Black Movie Banner Not Happening Yet

Things might be looking up for DC with Todd Phillip's upcoming Joker movie, but it looks like Warner Brothers won't be establishing DC's Black movie banner just yet.

Now that it's less than a week to the film's release, Warner Brothers has been busy campaigning for the Joker movie, releasing the final trailer for the movie as well as a slew of posters to boot. Phillips has been doing his share of the campaign as well, going on interviews with publications like the LA Times. During his interview with the news outlet, the director opened up about the beginnings of the Joker movie, saying that he actually pitched a DC Black offshoot label to DC when he approached Warner Brothers to talk about the film.

Apparently, Phillips proposed the idea of building DC Black, a label which he calls a laboratory for "independent-minded films about these characters."

Unfortunately, it seems like WB has a few reservations about the label. The filmmaker says that DC Black probably won't happen until his Joker movie is finally released and until the film's reviews make their way online.

"They're like, ‘Calm down with the label — how about you do one movie?' " the director said, laughing.

There's a lot of anticipation building up over the Joker movie. Considered more of a gritty character study than a comic book film, industry insiders believe that the film could have a pretty good shot at the awards circuit, even at the Academy Awards.

Joker premieres on October 4, 2019.
