Joker was definitely a huge hit among the fans and was even deemed as the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time. With the massive success that the movie has reached, would it be enough to consider making a sequel?

In a recent interview Deadline, director Todd Phillips seems like he's pretty much enthusiastic to make a second film following Joker. "When a movie does $1 billion and cost $60 million to make, of course, it comes up," he said. "But Joaquin [Phoenix] and I haven't really decided on it. We're open."

The director says he'd love to work with Phoenix "on anything" and that if there was ever a sequel, he would prefer for it have a "real thematic resonance" the way Joker did. "Ultimately being about childhood trauma and the lack of love, and the loss of empathy," he explained. Phillips says those were the things that made the movie work for them, so it is essential to "have something that had an equal thematic resonance."

Around 2 months ago, reports around a Joker sequel went around which got fans really excited. However, the hype didn't last long because it was quickly debunked a few moments later. Phillips says the reports were referring to things that were "just frankly untrue," and were "anticipatory at its best."

Although there isn't a Joker sequel in the works, both Phillips and Phoenix are open in making one and it seems like they're willing to do it as well, which looks like fans couldn't rule out a sequel in the near future yet.

Joker is getting an Ultra HD and Blu-Ray release on January 7, 2020.
