Earlier this week, Joker fans were ecstatic to hear that Warner Bros. was allegedly moving forward with a sequel. The excitement quickly mellowed down since the report was debunked a few moments later, and that no sequel of sorts is in the works. The news was a bit confusing, but director Todd Phillips clarifies the reports.

The Hollywood Reporter claimed Phillips had a meeting with Warner Bros. for "an outsized idea." However, the director recently told Indie Wire that there was no meeting that ever happened on that day, where he just "marched in." He claims that it's not his "style" to just go in and say he would want multiple titles to work on. "I just don't have the energy," he added.

Phillips said that when he pitched Joker, it wasn't for a movie, it was for a "whole label." However, Warner Bros. quickly shut his idea down. "Who am I to walk in and start a label at a film studio?" Phillips exclaimed. "But they said, let's do this one."

The director pointed out that there are no deals in place for a Joker sequel, but that doesn't mean that the idea wouldn't even be considered. "Well, a movie doesn't make a billion dollars and they don't talk about a sequel," he stated. That being said, Joaquin Phoenix and Phillips have publicly made it known that they have been talking about a sequel since they were in week two of shooting, but only because "it's a fun thing to talk about."

As for the THR article that was suddenly released, Phillips claimed it was referring to things that were "just frankly untrue." "I don't know how it gets started if it's some assistant trying to gain street cred with a writer," he added.

For now, it looks like there isn't going to be a Joker sequel in the near future since Phillips thinks the article was "anticipatory at its best."

Joker is currently screening in cinemas.
