John Boyega Says Star Wars: Episode VIII Will Be 'Darker' and 'Bigger'

John Boyega, who debuted as the former First Order stormtrooper Finn in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and is currently filming Episode VIII, took a break from filming this week to visit the Cannes film festival and receive the Chopard Trophy (along with Diary of a Teenage Girl actress Bel Powley).

Variety had the chance to talk to Boyega at the awards, and asked him about Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Rey and Finn's relationship, and Episode VIII.

On working with Rian Johnson for Star Wars: Episode VIII, he said:

"Rian Johnson is great. It's a different take, darker, bigger. Someone will say: "How do you get bigger than ‘Force Awakens?'" But it's crazy."

When Boyega was asked about Finn and Rey's relationship, he downplayed the possibility of romance.

Star Wars: Episode VIII is currently filming in Ireland, and is set to release in theaters on December 15, 2017.
