Marvel fans might be used to the studio cushioning viewers from devastating losses in their comic book hero movies, but things are going to be different in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4.
Marvel directors Joe and Anthony Russo have been painfully blunt about the potential for character death in their two-part Avengers movie, and now speaking with BBC's The Afternoon Show, Joe reiterates the end of a few arcs in Infinity War.
"My brother and I are firm believers that nothing has value unless it has an ending at some point and I do believe that this has been a really, really interesting experiment in filmmaking, what Marvel's done over the last 10 years, is serialized storytelling through multiple franchises. That's never been done before," Joe explained during the interview. "And it's important, I think, for this 'book,' if you want to call it that, that's been written over these 19 films, to have an ending. To have final chapters. Infinity War is the final chapter. There will be...I'll just say this, there will be surprises in the movie and I feel the audience should be prepared, going in, for surprises."
Infinity War wouldn't be as devastating or as dire if Marvel tried to shield fans from character death again, and the battle against the Mad Titan Thanos is going to cost the Earth's Mightiest Heroes a lot of lives in the film. The only question now is who's going to end up being one of the victims in Infinity War. Marvel staples like Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr), Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Captain America (Chris Evans) have all completed their own set of standalone trilogies in the MCU, so it's likely that the three might end up dying in the film. However, knowing their popularity, the Russos might have decided to keep the three alive until Avengers 4.
We never really know. We'll just have to wait and see.
