Joaquin Phoenix's Joker Could Be Based on Unused Dark Knight Concept Art

The DCEU is heading over the multiverse territory with their Joker movie next year, and everyone loves Joaquin Phoenix's new look like the character. As it turns out, it's possible that his face paint is actually inspired by concept art from Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight.

If I were to guess, this was concept art for Joker's opening heist, and it would've had the henchmen in painted stockings as compared to the masks we see in the final film.

Just looking at Phoenix though, it seems that a lot of things inspired his Joker look. Other than the plain old clown make-up, he has long hair and face paint like Heath Ledger's Joker, but the colors seem to be more inspired by Cesar Romero's 60s Joker outfit.

We also have no idea how this Joker acts as of now. We know that Jared Leto's version is a mix between Ace Ventura and a growling animal, but I have a feeling that this version of the Joker will be a lot closer to Ledger's version. With the character so wonderfully fleshed out, it was a shame that Ledger had to die and make The Dark Knight the last appearance of his Joker. Maybe Phillips and Scorsese wanted to channel the character one last time for this film.

Joker is set to hit theaters Oct. 4, 2019.
