J.K. Simmons Thoughts on MCU J.J. Jameson's Flat Top Hairdo

With the Raimi Spider-Man trilogy giving us the traditional J.J. Jameson from the comics, the MCU had revamped the character for Far from Home, changing J.J. from a temperamental news editor to an owner of a controversial scoop site. While there were sure to be discussions about J.J.'s reincarnation in the world, J.K. Simmons shares he didn't agree with the original look for the character.

Talking to Collider, Simmons explained:

"The only thing we didn't a hundred percent see eye to eye on, I think, was how much is this character going to be the character from, I think, the comic books and from the Sam Raimi original trilogy, and how much do we want to evolve it and to have it be more contemporary or more… you know. I was very attached to what I had done previously for a variety of reasons. So I guess the compromise ended up being no hair. [laughter] Which I think honestly, that decision might've just been them going, ‘We don't have time to make a wig. We got to shoot him tomorrow in the office.' So, J. Jonah Jameson either lost his hair in the last few years, or he was wearing a hairpiece the whole time. I don't know, you pick."

While the comic J.J. fit right in with the campy world of the Raimi films, he probably would have stuck out like a sore thumb if you put him in a modern superhero movie like Far from Home. I guess the look for MCU J.J. is fine, but what I really want to see is him interacting with his staff, specifically his poor intern Peter Parker—if Marvel and Sony ever find a way to make that happen organically.

For now, it's said that J.J. will be appearing not only in the Spider-Man movies but also the upcoming Sony spinoffs like Morbius and Venom. While it's great that Spider-Man connects those films to the MCU, it's nice that there will be other threads like the Daily Bugle and J.J.

The next Sony spinoff, Morbius, is set to come out on March 18, 2021. Spider-Man 3 hits theaters Dec. 17, 2021.
