Jim Carrey Breaks Silence on Paul Dano's Portrayal of The Riddler in The Batman

Paul Dano's unique and darker portrayal of The Riddler is considered as one of the main highlights of Matt Reeves' The Batman. His take on the villain was far from the usual version that we see in the comics as it is more inspired by real-life serial killers. Before Dano took the role in Reeves' film, Jim Carrey previously played the character in 1995's Batman Forever where his portrayal is more closer to the comics. So what does he think about Dano's new take on the role that he played before?

Speaking with Unilad, Carrey was asked about his thoughts on Dano's portrayal of The Riddler recently in The Batman to which he admitted that he still hasn't seen the film although he has "mixed emotions" about the darker take on the character. However, nevertheless, he expressed his admiration to Dano as an actor and acknowledged that they are "well done" even though it's not his personal taste.

"I’ve not seen it. It’s a very dark version. I have mixed emotions about it," Carrey said. "To each his own and all that. I love him as an actor, he’s a tremendous actor. There’s a spot of worry in me over gaffer-taping people’s faces and encouraging people to do the same. Some sickos out there that might adopt that method. I do have a conscience about the things I choose. [Sonic the Hedgehog character] Robotnik has cartoon bombs and no-one gets hurt. I know there’s a place for [The Batman], and I don’t want to criticize it, but it’s not my kind of thing... it’s very well done, those movies are very well done."

It is understandable that Carrey has "mixed emotions" about it since the new take on the character is a complete opposite of his version and it's not also closer to the version that he probably grew up on. However, despite that, he still expressed his admiration for Dano and he didn't left any disparaging comments, especially since he also mentioned that he hasn't seen the film yet and at least somehow we were able to hear his thoughts as the former Riddler.

As The Batman continues to do well at the box office, there are now alleged rumors and talks that Warner Bros. might green light a sequel soon where we will see the surviving characters return and introduce new villains. An HBO Max spinoff series centering on Colin Farrell's Penguin has been recently given a series order.
