I think we can all agree that Jennifer Lawrence's time in the Marvel Universe divided the fandom and while her portrayal of Mystique was actually above decent, her being the focal point of Fox's now-defunct X-Men franchise didn't sit well with a lot of fans. Now, with the Multiverse in play in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there's a strong possibility that we'll see her reprise her mutant role in the billion-dollar franchise but according to a new rumor, it looks like Sony Pictures has other plans for her potential return to the Marvel Realm.

According to a new scoop from the good folks over at Giant Freakin Robot, the star of The Hunger Games franchise is being eyed to join Sony's Spider-Man film franchise as an important character. The website's sources claim that Lawrence is the frontrunner to play Madame Web in live-action. However, the specifics regarding her potential casting have yet to be disclosed.

To those unaware, Madame Web is one of the integral characters in Spider-Man lore and oftentimes serves as the web-slinger's spirit guide and his unofficial conscience if you will. The character was also a main fixture in the '90s Spider-Man Animated Series.

I gotta say, if the rumors are true, Jennifer Lawrence is definitely an odd choice for Madame Web considering her age. In the comics, Madame Web has always been portrayed as an older and wiser woman so casting a relatively younger actress for the role is quite interesting, to say the least. But hey, if the MCU's Aunt May can be played by a middle-aged actress, I guess the idea of a younger Madame Web shouldn't come as a surprise.

Other details about Sony Pictures' Madam Web spinoff project are still being kept under wraps. Meanwhile, Spider-Man: No Way Home hits cinemas on December 17, 2021.
