Jennifer Lawrence Only Came Back To X-Men For The Fans

Jennifer Lawrence will be reprising her role as Mystique in the upcoming X-Men: Dark Phoenix, and even though her contract for X-Men movies was already done by Apocalypse, she still decided to return. With Mystique suddenly becoming integral to the formation of the X-Men, Lawrence talks about her reasons for coming back.

In an interview with Digital Spy, Lawrence explains that it was all about the fans. She says:

"My contract was up, I didn't have to do another one, but if I didn't do another one, what would her story be? I felt like I owed it to the fans, and I owed it to the character to follow her journey, to be fair to the movies, and not be like, ‘I don't want to do another X-Men!' And then I just never show up and everyone's very confused about the Mystique they've been following for the last three films."

To be honest, I'm not really a fan of what has happened to Mystique's character in the new X-Men trilogy. It seems that the producers are hung-up on Lawrence's fame from Hunger Games and wanted to keep her character a hero for the film. Mystique was a great villain, and it just seems weird that she would be part of the good guys all of a sudden.

At least you have to appreciate Lawrence for her dedication to the fans. There have been stories about how tedious the make-up process can get, and even Alan Cumming, who played Nightcrawler in X2, was said to have declined to come back for the sequel because he didn't want to go through the make-up process again.

Mystique returns in X-Men: Dark Phoenix which comes out Nov. 2, 2018.
