Jared Leto "Blinded" Himself For Blade Runner 2049

Jared Leto's always been an intense method actor, deep diving into a role to make sure he gets his character right.

Back in 2007, the Hollywood star willingly decided to gain more than 60 pounds to so that he could play the role of Mark David Chapman in Chapter 27. Last year, reports came out that Leto went to drastic measures to stay in character while filming Suicide Squad, sending the cast some pretty terrifying "gifts."

Now, it seems like Leto's decided to go method in Blade Runner 2049. Speaking in an interview with The Wall Street Journal (via Screen Rant)the actor revealed that he had actually decided to blind himself for the film's principal photography by wearing custom lenses that rendered him incapable of sight.

Though it might seem too much, Leto received praise from director Denis Villenueve for his method acting while playing the part of Niander Wallace in Blade Runner 2049.

The director felt like Leto's intensive method acting adding texture to the film, and in the interview with the publication the French Canadian filmmaker recounts Leto's first camera test where the actor came in complete character.

"He could not see at all. He was walking with an assistant, very slowly. It was like seeing Jesus walking into a temple. Everybody became super silent, and there was a kind of sacred moment. Everyone was in awe. It was so beautiful and powerful — I was moved to tears."

Villenueve certainly sounds impressed by Leto's method acting. We just wonder whether this will translate in Blade Runner 2049 and whether viewers will feel the same way once they see the film. Let's wait and see.

Blade Runner 2049 premieres October 6, 2017.
