James Gunn: Suicide Squad 2 is Still Priority Over GotG Vol. 3

Fans rejoiced when it was announced that James Gunn was brought back for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, but everyone started wondering what was to happen to his current project, The Suicide Squad. As it turns out, Marvel has agreed with Gunn to put priority of SS first before he jumps back into the Marvel Universe.

Talking to JoBlo, DC producer Peter Safran says:

"No, it was all handled incredibly elegantly and everybody knows on both sides that Suicide Squad is the priority today and he'll finish that movie and then everybody knows that his next film will be Guardians. It's the best of all possible both worlds, I think, for fans and for James Gunn himself."

Before Gunn was hired for Suicide Squad, he was actually set to work on the third Guardians film. Everyone thought Guardians 3 would usher in the fourth phase of the MCU, but after Gunn was fired, the future of the franchise suddenly found itself in a bit of chaos with the future of GOTG also going up in the air.

Hopefully now with Gunn onboard, we get the Guardians movie that he wanted to make all this time. With GOTG coming out as one of the most beloved franchises in the MCU, it was only fitting that Gunn was given the chance to finish what he started.

As for Suicide Squad 2, Gunn is set to be making a soft reboot. The movie is aiming to start shooting later this year, and everyone hopes Gunn can work the same magic that he did with the Guardians. Hopefully WB will be more respectful of the director's vision this time around.

No release date has been set for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, but Suicide Squad 2 is set to come out Aug. 6, 2021.
