James Gunn Shoots Down the Idea of Marvel and DC Rivalry

In just a couple of weeks, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will release in theaters. The upcoming MCU film will mark not only the final movie with the current iteration of the titular team, but it will also mark James Gunn's final project in the MCU as he is now serving as the co-chairman of DC Studios.

Gunn's hiring as the new architect of the DC franchise was seen as an opportunity to bridge the gap between the two major comic book movie franchises considering their perceived rivalry and given the director's history with both properties.

Speaking with Rolling Stone, Gunn addressed his stance regarding the Marvel and DC franchises where he clarified that he doesn't see both as being in competition with one another and that there is an advantage of having the two properties exist in the media landscape at the same time.

"To be frank, I think the better Marvel movies do, it’s better for DC, and the better DC movies do, it’s better for Marvel. When people see bad movies, they don’t want to spend more money on seeing more movies. So you want good movies to happen," he explained.

The DC Studios co-chairman also shared his thoughts regarding the so-called "superhero fatigue" that is happening nowadays as the box office performances of the comic book films recently haven't been on the same level as the era when the genre was at its peak.

"It has to do with the kind of stories that get to be told, and if you lose your eye on the ball, which is character," Gunn continued.

"We love Superman. We love Batman. We love Iron Man. Because they’re these incredible characters that we have in our hearts. And if it becomes just a bunch of nonsense onscreen, it gets really boring. But I get fatigued by most spectacle films, by the grind of not having an emotionally grounded story."

It is great to hear from the DC Studios chairman himself that the competition between the two properties has just been friendly at the very least. After all, we have seen over the years that fans are willing to embrace both franchises and there will be an audience for these types of films regardless of the studio.
