James Gunn and his Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 crew made an appearance during Marvel Studios' San Diego Comic-Con panel over the weekend and naturally, fans were expecting to see their first look at the "final" Guardians film under his helm. Unfortunately, the director didn't provide any footage for the upcoming MCU flick which is now effectively part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Phase 5 slate.

Despite that, Gunn still pulled a major surprise under his sleeve as Chukwudi Iwuji showed up at the event in full costume, officially confirming his casting as the villainous High Evolutionary.

Following the GOTG gang's appearance at SDCC (minus Dave Bautista and Zoe Saldana), Gunn was bombarded with tweets from a frustrated fandom who are saying that Marvel had a hand for the lack of footage. Responding to one fan, Gunn took responsibility for the trailer's absence, saying that fans will have to "wait just a beat" to see it.

He wrote: "I wish you could have too. But it’s not just Marvel, it’s also me. Although I love the teaser some VFX aren’t where I’d want them to be for repeated views & close inspection - remember we didn’t wrap long ago - so you’ll have to wait just a beat! Sorry!"

Gunn's latest statement pretty much indicates that the trailer won't be shown at this year's D23 Expo so I guess the waiting game begins. One thing's for sure, GOTG Vol. 3 will be an emotionally-charged farewell and I don't think most of us are ready for it.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is currently scheduled for release on May 5, 2023.
