James Gunn Reveals How Quickly DC Hired Him After Marvel Axing

Remember when Disney and Marvel Studios decided to fire James Gunn from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3? That crisis is now over but we still remember how amazing it sounded when it was then reported that DC had hired Gunn for a new project. But how quickly did DC snatch up Gunn to helm a comic book movie? The Suicide Squad director has opened up about finding work so soon after the firing.

There is little doubt that people were shocked when it was announced that Gunn has been removed from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 after his old controversial tweets resurfaced. However, it didn't take long for the filmmaker to find a new job. So how long did DC wait before calling Gunn?

"It happened immediately," Gunn told Den of Geek. "We started talking about what the project would be."

Amazingly, Gunn also admitted that The Suicide Squad was not the first project DC offered during the meeting.

"The first thing that was brought up was Superman, but I didn't know if I wanted to do that," he said.

That's an interesting revelation considering that there haven't been any updates on a possible Man of Steel sequel or a reboot for a future film series. It's also unclear why Gunn turned down the offer but we're happy that he chose The Suicide Squad as his next project.

Although he was removed from Vol. 3, it would later be revealed that Disney and Marvel Studios have reversed their decision. Gunn has been reinstated as director of the third Guardians film which he will be working on as soon as he completes work on Peacemaker.

Gunn's next project The Suicide Squad is scheduled for release on August 6, 2021. For now, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has not been given a production start date nor an official release date. Stay tuned for more updates on this story.
