James Gunn Reveals He Had to Fight to Have Dave Bautista in Guardians of the Galaxy

Marvel fans love how dense Drax (Dave Bautista) can be in James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy movies. Not only do jokes fly over the intergalactic-criminal-turned-hero's head, he has a great way of poking fun at the rest of the Guardians of the Galaxy.

However, while there's certainly a lot of love for Drax the Destroyer, it turns out that former wrestler Dave Bautista would have never had the opportunity to play the space misfit had not James Gunn fought for the actor.

Taking to Twitter for another question and answer session with his followers, Gunn was asked by a fan about the initial reception everyone had when word came out that Bautista was going to play Drax in his first Guardians of the Galaxy movie.

It turns out that the director had to fight for the wrestler – though it seems like he doesn't really mind the battle.

"I had to fight for him," Gunn replied, "and it was the most worthy fight I've ever fought. Love and miss you [Dave Bautista]."

Bautista is a gem to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Not only for his portrayal of Drax but his loyalty to Guardians of the Galaxy director, James Gunn. Back in 2018, alt-right extremists decided to run a smear campaign against Gunn because of his opinions about the administration. The extremists dredged up insensitive and inappropriate tweets that Gunn had made in the past, and the director was forced to exit Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Bautista was one of Gunn's staunch supporters, defending the filmmaker against trolls. Not only was Gunn eventually rehired by Disney, but he also got a job from Warner Brothers to direct the DC Extended Universe's The Suicide Squad movie.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has yet to receive a release date but we'll update fans as soon as we get word.
