James Gunn Defends the Need to Promote An MCU Movie Despite Being Boss of DC

Before James Gunn took the post as co-CEO of DC Studios, he actively worked for Marvel Studios, and his notable work for the MCU came in the form of the Guardians of the Galaxy films. Even though the production of Vol. 3, which is the final movie of the franchise, has been finished at some point in the past, the final product has yet to be seen by the fans once it premieres in theaters this May 5.

It’s obvious that Gunn’s passion for the Guardians is on another level given that he worked on their stories for many memorable years, and now that it’s only a matter of weeks before Gunn’s final contribution to the MCU arrives, some feel the need to question why he’s still promoting the Marvel movie despite spearheading DC already. Gunn took to social media to defend why he needs to support his MCU movie after a fan mocked him for promoting the third Guardian movie.

“As I’ve said many times, I've spent the last twelve years of my life creating the Guardians films. They mean the world to me. And when I came to DC everyone at WBD knew & expected & supported that I’d be promoting our final film 100% when it was released. Imagine what an awful person I’d be if I went to DC and turned my back on my own film, the people who invested in it, and the friends I created it with.” Gunn reasoned.

The Guardians of the Galaxy team has already built quite a solid relationship given how many years they worked on the Guardians' story together. When Gunn moved to DC, he openly communicated that if he were given the chance, he was going to bring the GotG family with him, and Chris Pratt and Dave Bautista have been teasing that jumping from Marvel to DC is always possible. So fans have to tune in to see when and which DC character the actors will take on once they change course.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 opens in cinemas on May 5, 2023.
