James Gunn Gets Honest If Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 Will Connect with Kang’s Story

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania set up Jonathan Majors’ Kang in the hype line when it premiered, but that all went down the drain when the actor got caught up in a series of controversies, making the fans' excitement for Kang’s story die as fast as it sparked while also insisting that Marvel Studios should fire the actor. Given that James Gunn’s third and final Guardians of the Galaxy movie is next in line for the MCU, some fans wonder if the film will have any connection to Kang the Conqueror.

While responding to fans' questions on Instagram, Gunn revealed that the connections between his film and Kang may not be as strong as fans expect. “Vol 3 is about ending the story of these Guardians, not about setting up anything else. I don’t even know what’s going on with the other Marvel movies,” he said.

During his time at Marvel, Gunn has always kept the Guardians of the Galaxy largely distinct from the rest of the MCU, and it appears that he has no intention to change the course, especially now that this will be his final project for Marvel and he now has a new major role at DC Studios. Additionally, Kang's Victor Timely Variant has already been confirmed to play a crucial role in Loki Season 2 later this year, which should only be the first of several appearances throughout the Multiverse Saga.

As for Major's future as the bad guy, industry insider Jeff Sneider revealed on the Hot Mic podcast that Marvel Studios hasn’t made any decisions yet regarding the Creed star's role in the MCU. But they are involved in discussions with Majors’ agent to “discuss potential options going forward.”

In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, as the guardians settle in Knowhere, their lives will be shadowed by Rocket's troubled past and Peter Quill’s grief over the loss of Gamora. Given the threat Rocket is in, Star-Lord and his team must rally around a dangerous mission to save Rocket's life—a mission that might claim the life of one of the beloved guardians or alter the crew's bond for the worst.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 opens in cinemas on May 5.
