James Gunn Defends Gender-Swapping Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 Character

One of the fans brought up how Cosmo the Spacedog was gender-swapped in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Apparently, considering that Cosmo has always been known as a ‘good boy’, director James Gunn should not have changed Cosmo into being ‘female’ in the threequel.

Well, upon seeing the fan tweet, Gunn had no choice but to quickly address this on Twitter and that is by replying with, “Because Cosmo is based on Laika, the Russian dog, who was a female, so I gender-swapped her back.”

However, the fan remained insistent that Cosmo should have stayed as a ‘good boy’.

“It makes no sense why to change it. Keeping it wasn’t inaccurate as the comic is a male dog, it serves no purpose to change it.” The fan tweeted back, “The original comic was a male dog, you are not ‘changing it back’ because it was never a female in the first place. Only inspired by.”

Gunn, as he is, defended his decision further by pointing out how Drax, Mantis, the High Evolutionary, and other characters were not aliens in the original source material, either, and yet the fan complains none about the sort.

So what makes this gender-swap all the more relevant when compared to the main characters in the threequel?

Overall, the fan made their stance clear: “I hate comics changing established characters (unless they state it’s a multiverse thing).”

Gunn eventually ended the conversation by confirming: “It’s always a multiverse thing. That’s what the MCU is — a different version of Earth 616. And again, you should look up the meaning of ‘adapt.’”

James Gunn is a widely known comic book fan, so it’s no secret he knows how to navigate in the world of superhero genres.

The Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 director is no stranger when it comes to calling out people on their BS, especially one that made no particular change to the story he produced for the big screens.

Let’s not forget, this is most likely not going to be the last time Gunn will ever gender-swap his characters and fans will have to stick through if they want to keep seeing his works.

For now, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is still showing in cinemas worldwide.
