James Gunn Confirms Writing Rocket's Backstory While Working on First Guardians of the Galaxy Movie

It has already been confirmed that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will explore Rocket Raccoon's origin story. However, Rocket's story isn't something new for James Gunn. The director just confirmed he planned to explore Rocket's origins when he was working on the first film.

James Gunn recently spoke to Collider about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. During the interview, he shared how much of the sequel's story came from the Marvel comic books.

"There's some that's taken from the comics, but there was always this concept of Halfworld, and of course, Lylla is his girlfriend in the comics, but it's a little bit different than that," Gunn said. "I didn't see it exactly like that."

The Suicide Squad director then admitted that it was Rocket's story that got him started on the first Guardians of the Galaxy film.

He said, "It was very important for me to tell this story because this was the thing that got me to write the first movie, and so people out here have asked, 'So when did you come up with this backstory? Where was it?' And I said, 'I actually came up with the backstory before I wrote the story for Guardians 1.'"

"So Rocket's past, his history, was a part of who I thought Rocket was from the very beginning," Gunn stated.

It's awesome to know that Rocket Raccoon was always the heart of Guardians of the Galaxy. We're just glad that he now has the chance to bring Rocket's story to life and give the franchise the conclusion it deserves.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will bring back Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldaña, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Sean Gunn, Elizabeth Debicki, Maria Bakalova, and Sylvester Stallone. Chukwudi Iwuji and Will Poulter are confirmed to join the cast.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will premiere in theaters on May 5, 2023.
