James Gunn Confirmed as Director for Suicide Squad 2?

Marvel may have fired James Gunn from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, but now he has a new project in the form of Suicide Squad 2. Gunn had recently been hired by DC to write a script for the film, but now it's been confirmed that he's going to be directing as well.

This was confirmed by Michael Rooker who had this to say about Gunn's firing at the Walker Stalker Con in Atlanta (via ComicBook): "It's terrible, isn't it? Yeah, but oh well, guess what? He's on a gig already. Suicide Squad, that's right. He's writing it and directing it as well."

Of course, we don't have any official confirmation from DC yet if Gunn will indeed direct, but seeing that Rooker has a close relationship with Gunn, it's possible that he has insider knowledge on what Gunn is going to do next. With Guardians 3 supposedly a big project for the MCU, I wonder what's going on through Gunn's head having to step down to a sequel for one of the DCEU's weakest entries.

No doubt Gunn will have something good in store for the Suicide Squad sequel. He's proven himself to be a good writer, and based on what we saw in Guardians, he can take even the most obscure characters and turn them into box office gold.

With DC's roster supposedly filled up for the next year, we have yet to get an official release date for Suicide Squad 2. If I were to guess, we could be looking at a 2021 release—just like with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
