James Gunn Makes Bold Promise About Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3's Runtime

Last week, we learned that the upcoming film Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is set to be one of the longest MCU movies to date as it reportedly has a runtime of 149 minutes. Considering that it will be the last movie of the current iteration of the team, it is not surprising at this point that they are taking a lot of time on their final hurrah.

Since Marvel Studios and Disney have not confirmed the details, MCU fans are wondering whether there is some truth to the reports. As usual, in order to find out the answer, a fan was able to directly ask director James Gunn on Twitter about the runtime and fortunately, he has a response.

Gunn confirmed in a tweet that the reported 149-minute runtime of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is likely to be true. While they haven't decided on the final number yet, he did affirm that the runtime is "around that long" and promises that "not a second [was] wasted" and there is "no fat" on its long runtime.

"It’s around that long, although that’s not yet exact. And, I promise, not a second is wasted. There’s no fat. It was necessary to experience the full arc for every major Guardians character, not only for this film, but for the trilogy (or, I should say, trilogy plus)," he tweeted.

In a response to a follow-up question from a fan, Gunn clarified that there is no official number yet on the runtime since they haven't made a final estimation yet regarding the end credits which will determine whether it is indeed going to be more or less around 149 minutes.

He said, "It’s gonna be around that. It’s just the length of end credits that are being estimated in this running time."

We will never know until we see the film itself whether they earned the runtime or not. Nevertheless, it is exciting that we will get to spend a lot of time with the characters on their final journey and, hopefully, it will be a very satisfying closure to their arcs throughout their run since the first film.
