James Cameron: The Avatar Sequels Have Officially Wrapped

Legendary filmmaker James Cameron has a lot of projects under his belt as of now from Terminator 6 to Alita: Battle Angel, but probably the biggest fish to fry on his list is the four Avatar sequels that were announced. As it turns out, principal photography has already wrapped for the film, and Cameron released a video to announce it:

Following the announcement is also a small plug for next year's Alita: Battle Angel. For that film, Cameron is only attached as producer and directing duties are taken over by Robert Rodriguez.

We don't have any official synopsis on the Avatar sequel yet, but we do have some info to piece together here and there. Where the first movie took to the skies, the sequel is said to take a huge part underwater. Instead of the first film's protagonists, Jake and Neytiri, we will also be following their children instead.

Oddly enough, we're going to see some more familiar faces in the sequel as well. Sigourney Weaver and Stephen Lang are set to reprise their roles of Dr. Grace and Col. Quaritch. Seeing that both their characters died in the first film, I have a feeling their involvement is going to be via flashback or found footage.

We also have some new faces joining the franchise in the form of Titanic alum Kate Winslet and Prisoner of Azkaban's David Thewlis.

The four sequels have been titled Avatar: The Way of Water, Avatar: The Seed Bearer, Avatar: The Tulkun Rider, and Avatar: The Quest for Eywa; as of now we don't know in what order those movies are supposed to come out.

Avatar 2 is set to release on Dec. 18, 2020.
