James Cameron Says Avatar 2 Profits Will Force Him To Work on Next Sequels

It's no secret that Avatar: The Way of Water is a huge box office hit just weeks after its release back in December. Naturally, this should mean good things for James Cameron who has spent more than a decade working on the sequel. However, the filmmaker is also concerned about the film's success since it would mean he would have to work on Avatar 3 and the other sequels.

James Cameron was recently a guest on Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace? where he once again addressed the success of Avatar 2 (via Variety). However, he also seemed weary of the work ahead for him.

“It looks like with the momentum that the film has now that we’ll easily pass our break even in the next few days, so it looks like I can’t wiggle out of this and I’m gonna have to do these other sequels,” Cameron said. “I know what I’m going to be doing the next six or seven years.”

Cameron then pointed out that he is hopeful about the future considering that Avatar 3 is almost done.

“The point is we’re going to be okay. I’m sure that we’ll have a discussion soon with the top folks at Disney about the game plan going forward for Avatar 3, which is already in the can – we’ve already captured and photographed the whole film, so we’re in extended post-production to do all that CG magic,” he said. Cameron then added that the next sequels are already in development.

“And then Avatar 4 and 5 are both written. We even have some of 4 in the can. We’ve begun a franchise at this point. We’ve begun a saga that can now play out over multiple films,” Cameron concluded.

These are great updates and it's no surprise that things are looking up for the franchise. For James Cameron, it all means that his next three projects are already planned out for him.

Avatar: The Way of Water is still screening in theaters worldwide.
