Jackie Chan On Why Americans Should Be “Scared” Of Warcraft’s Box Office Sales In China

Warcraft isn't raking in the big bucks domestically, but it is gaining decent ticket sales nonetheless. However, the same cannot be said in the international front, as tickets of the movie overseas are selling like pancakes. To be exact, the movie's $261.7 million of sales from its total gross of $286.1 million comes from abroad, with the majority being from China.

Because of this, Jackie Chan says he thinks Americans should watch out for the Chinese when it comes to Hollywood's movies.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Chan said during the Shanghai Film Festival:

Warcraftmade 600 million RMB ($91 million) in two days --- this has scared the Americans. If we can make a film that earns 10 billion ($1.5 billion), then people from all over the world who study film will learn Chinese, instead of us learning English.

While the 62-year-old actor may be right when it comes to China possibly becoming the largest theatrical market by next year, it's worth noting that there are still many factors to consider before it can be officially claimed that Chinese films will dominate Hollywood soon. Chinese films are still underway with its influence on the American marketplace.

That said, there's still major American media powerhouses to consider, such as Disney, which currently own the Marvel Cinematic Universe as well as Lucasfilm. There's also Warner Bros. and 20th Century Fox, all of which didn't need sales from China in breaking box office records with films like Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Captain America: Civil War, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Deadpool.

In any case, Chan's statement is still worth considering, since the Chinese market is clearly gaining influence on the world platform, and it will continue to do so in time.

Warcraft is now in theaters.
