Warcraft To Beat Star Wars: The Force Awakens At The Chinese Box Office

Despite Star Wars: The Force Awakens' box office record-smashing performance worldwide, it seems that the newly released World of Warcraft will beat the latest film of the Star Wars saga at the Chinese box office.

As the Chinese media outlet Yidiba reports, Warcraft has been a revelation in the domestic market of China. Duncan Jones' adaptation of Blizzard's gaming frachise, World of Warcraft, has become the second highest grossing film of all time in China. On opening day alone, the film grossed $90 million, and Yibida predicts that the film will rake $305 million in ticket sales. This was quite surprising as the film was expected to flop at the box office.

The Force Awakens only grossed $53 million on its opening day, about two-thirds the amount that Warcraft earned on its opening day.

This could mean that the Chinese audience are more drawn to epic fantasy films like Warcraft than Star Wars.

World of Warcraft is one of the most popular games played in China, and the franchise's popularity contributed to the financial success of the film rather than the quality of the film and its story. Warcraft currently has a 27% score in Rotten Tomatoes. You can read our review here.

Warcraft is now showing in theaters.
