Jack Kirby's Grandson Shares First Ever Drawing of Black Panther

Marvel's Black Panther had just recently gone back into the spotlight with its seven Oscar nominations, and Jeremy Kirby, the grandson of the legendary Jack Kirby, shares this first ever sketch of the character who would be the Black Panther.

As it turns out, the original name for the character would have been "Coal Tiger", hence the C and T on his belt. Strangely enough, if you thought the name change was due to the rise of the Black Panther political party, Stan Lee just said it was a "strange coincidence". In truth, the character of the Black Panther came out July 1966 and the political party was founded a few months after in the same year.

Whatever your take is on Black Panther getting an Oscar nomination, the movie is no doubt a very important milestone in the culture of comic book films. It's amazing how the movie was able to take the culture of Africa and integrate it into a place like Wakanda. It's also nice to see the black hero in the lead for once, not playing second fiddle to the main MCU stars like War Machine or Falcon.

Now Marvel Studios is planning to break more barriers with Captain Marvel, which is also set to come out in the same release window as Black Panther last year. Will it be another success, or will it fall flat due to comparisons to Wonder Woman? Time will tell.

Captain Marvel hits theaters March 8.
